U.S. Military Ground Vehicles
Market Need - Military Ground Vehicles:
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) estimates that corrosion costs the United States Military between $10 and $20 billion per year. Of this, $2 billion is attributed to corrosion related problems with the approximately 350,000 Army ground vehicles. Because the U. S. Military has over 140,000 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV) a large portion of this yearly corrosion cost is attributed to HMMWV corrosion. Currently the average age of military HMMWVs is 17.9 years with 79% of HMMWVs over the designed service life of 13 years. It is important to note that in addition to the tremendous cost associated with repairing corrosion related problems the overall readiness level of the military is reduced when these vehicles go in for repair that takes between 2 and 12 months. In an effort to mitigate the extreme yearly cost and reduced readiness related to corrosion repair, the Bob Stump National Defense Authorization Act of 2002 states that “The Secretary of Defense shall develop and implement a long-term strategy to reduce corrosion and the effects of corrosion on military equipment.” ElectraWatch CHM sensors provide a cost effective way to reduce the yearly impact of corrosion on the military and meet this objective.
