U.S. Navy Ships
Market Need - Navy Ships:
The U.S. Navy Fleet consists of 283 ships, of which, 249 are actively commissioned. These 283 Navy ships have an $880 million annual cost of corrosion, costing approximately $3.1 million per ship per year.
In addition to the current fleet of Steel hull/Aluminum superstructure ships the Navy is investing in the Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) program. Under the LCS program the Navy is evaluating two competing designs from Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics that focus on the extensive use of Aluminum in the ships design. Lockheed Martin's design uses a steel hull with an aluminum superstructure, while the General Dynamics ship uses an all-aluminum hull and superstructure with steel stiffening added into the hull. The LCS program is evidence that Aluminum is a critical construction material in the design of state of the art Navy ships. The ElectraWatch DoS probe will serve as an invaluable tool for the preservation and maintenance of both the current fleet and future generations of ships.
